Wes Stoner

A native of Canton, Georgia, Wes Stoner is the Choral Director at Hillgrove High School in the Cobb County School District, where he teaches and conducts the Men’s Ensemble, Select Women’s Ensemble, Treble Chorus, Concert Chorale, and Hawkappellas. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of Georgia and a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from Michigan State University. Prior to Hillgrove, Wes held positions teaching choral music and music theory at Kennesaw Mountain High School, Lovejoy High School, and the Fine Arts Magnet at Mt. Zion High School, where he jointly served as the Lead Teacher of Choral Music for the Clayton County Public Schools. Conductors and teachers, under which he studied, include Rodney Caldwell, Edgar Scruggs, Allen Crowell, David Rayl, Jonathan Reed, and Sandra Snow.

An active member of GMEA, Wes serves as the State Chair of the Choral Division, overseeing the choral activities within the organization. His Select Women’s Ensemble performed for the 2013 In-Service Conference in Savannah, GA. Wes has served as the organizer for the District 6 High School Honor Chorus, and more recently as the organizer for the Senior Women’s All-State Chorus, under the direction of Dr. Sandra Snow.  Wes is also active as a clinician and guest conductor, having conducted numerous district honor choruses across the state. In addition to positions within GMEA, Wes is also serving as the Interest Session Chair for the 2016 ACDA Southern Division Conference in Chattanooga, TN. He is a frequent guest conductor of the Cherokee Chorale in Canton, most recently for its 2011, 2012, and 2013 Pops concert series.

Wes maintains an active singing schedule, having appeared with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus and Chamber Chorus at New York’s Carnegie Hall and twice with the Berlin Philharmonic. He also sings with, and is the assistant director for, Coro Vocati, a professional chamber choral ensemble in Atlanta, conducted by Dr. John Dickson. In the summers of 2011 and 2014, Wes sang as a member of the choir for the C.S. Lewis Institute’s Oxbridge program, in Oxford and Cambridge, England. Wes is currently conductor of the Carillon handbell choir, and is a staff singer at First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta. Professional affiliations include NAfME and ACDA.
